Ervin Wheeler, MD, FACS relocated his cosmetic plastic surgery practice to LJC after many years in La Mesa, CA. His excellent reputation for natural results drew many of his patients from La Jolla and the coast. After closing his private practice and joining La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre, Dr. Wheeler was delighted to work both new and longstanding patients from all over California.

For over 34 years, Dr. Wheeler has traveled to Mexico several times a year as a volunteer with the Interface Plastic Surgery organization. In Mexico, he serves the poor by providing free plastic surgery services such as cleft-lip and palate repair, burn scar reconstruction, and repair of facial trauma. Dr. Wheeler was President of the Interface Board from 2012 to 2016.

For the last 5 years, he has been part of a group here in San Diego who volunteers for FreshStart at Children’s Hospital. Five times a year he devotes a weekend and operates on disadvantaged infants, children, and teens suffering from physical deformities caused by birth defects, accidents, abuse, or disease.

Why plastic surgery?

The anatomy of the human body is remarkable—that’s what drew me to medicine. I realized that plastic surgery was the right path for me as a surgical intern at Stanford. I worked under Dr. Chase, the Chief of Plastic Surgery at that time, and saw how plastic surgery can immediately improve people’s self-confidence and outlook on life.

About face

While I enjoy all aspects of plastic surgery, facial procedures are among my favorites to perform. I can make very small changes that have a tremendous impact on how a patient sees him or herself. Cosmetic rhinoplasty and facelift surgery are probably the most intriguing to me, as they are so personalized, but reconstructive procedures are so very rewarding to perform. While in India several years ago, I had the opportunity to repair a 72-year-old man’s cleft lip. He had been an outcast in his village due to this deformity, but after his surgery, he was able to marry his girlfriend of 50 years!

On family & fishing

Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my family, including the four-legged members, who look forward to their daily walk. My wife Laura, a Nurse Practitioner at Children’s Hospital, and I have 3 grown daughters, Jennie, Sarah, and Ellie, and two grandchildren. I also enjoy archery, hiking, and fishing, which I hear are common hobbies among the surgeons here ?

A hard day’s night

I’m giving away my age here, but I’m quite the Beatles fan. In fact, the first album I ever bought was a Beatles album; I cannot remember which one, as I bought several. Their music stands the test of time.
