What is Mommy Makeover recovery like?

As a mom, naturally you are concerned with how any surgery will affect your family, particularly your ability to care for your little ones after your procedure. As every mommy makeover is tailored to an individual patient’s needs, the recovery process is a little different for everyone.

Plan ahead for full-time home and childcare help

In general, you’ll need to have help around the house around the clock for 2-3 days after surgery, and up to a week or more if you’ve had a tummy tuck.

While most patients can begin their return to daily activities (such as driving, light housework, a desk job, and shopping) within 2-3 weeks, you’ll need continued assistance with heavier lifting and strenuous aspects of childcare for the first 4-6 weeks. After this time, with your surgeon’s okay, you can lift your kids again.

Most patients need 1 to 2 weeks off work

How much time you will need away from work depends on the procedures you are having and the nature of your job. If you are only having breast enhancement and liposuction, for example, you may be ready to go back to a desk job in about one week. If you are having a tummy tuck and/or your job requires physical labor, you will need more time, up to 3 weeks off. We will discuss your personal projected recovery time with you at your consultation to help you plan most effectively for your surgery.

Expect a 4 to 8-week break from exercise

You should be able to resume easy walking within a few days after a mommy makeover, but strenuous activity will be off-limits for several weeks. A tummy tuck will require the longest hiatus from exercise, about 6 to 8 weeks, as your incisions will need to be fully healed before heading to the gym or ocean.

As with any plastic surgery procedure, you’ll have some scars after a mommy makeover.

By choosing an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon, you can be sure that your surgeon has the skill and knowledge to produce the least amount of scarring possible. Moreover, your scars will fade over time and will be in places that are easily hidden by clothing – even a bikini. We can also help you find a good scar minimizing treatment to help your scars heal smoothly and reduce redness.

At your consultation and pre-op appointments, your plastic surgeon, nurse, and patient care coordinator will give you all the important details about recovery. Please call or text us at 858-452-1981 with any questions.
