Injectable Fillers: Q & A with Lauren Amico Reed, PA-C, MMS
Q: What dermal fillers are available?
A: Popular dermal fillers include Restylane®, Juvéderm®, Restylane® Lyft, and Belotero®. These fillers are made of a naturally occurring substance called hyaluronic acid. Sculptra® is a collagen booster, which works by stimulating collagen production to plump and firm skin vs. physically revolumizing.
Q: Are dermal fillers safe?
A: All dermal fillers we use at LJCSC are safe and FDA-approved. Allergic reactions to dermal fillers are rare and serious complications from the procedure are uncommon.
Q: How do I decide which filler to get?
A: Each filler has specific features that make it ideal for treating certain areas of the face. Some are better for smoothing fine lines on delicate skin, while others work best for treating deep creases in the nasolabial folds. The only way to be sure you’re getting the right filler for you is to talk with a qualified practitioner who can evaluate your skin, review your health history, and prescribe a filler based on your aesthetic goals. Q: What should I do prior to my procedure?
A: Patients are advised to avoid medications that could increase bruising, such as aspirin non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), Vitamin E, and fish oil.
Q: Are dermal fillers painful?
A: Pain is dependent on the person and area of the face being treated. A topical numbing cream will be applied prior to the procedure and ice will be given post-procedure. All dermal fillers are mixed with lidocaine to create a more comfortable experience.
Q: Is there any downtime?
A: Mild bruising and swelling can occur for the first 3-5 days. Patients may apply makeup immediately after the procedure and can resume normal activities.
Q: How long do the effects last?
A: Results of dermal fillers typically last for 6-12 months. Results are seen immediately and subsequent treatments may be needed to achieve full correction and maintain desired outcomes.
