What to expect with your La Jolla PRP hair restoration treatment
Our hair restoration specialist, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hector Salazar-Reyes, performs PRP injections right here in our comfortable office treatment rooms at LJCSC. The average appointment takes an hour or less.
Step 1: We’ll determine your PRP treatment plan
Much of this step can be completed at your free consultation, when you and Dr. Salazar will discuss your concerns and goals for hair restoration. At your PRP appointment, Dr. Salazar will review your goals and treatment plan, and then help you settle into our comfortable treatment chair and prepare for the PRP injections.
Step 2: We will draw a small blood sample from your arm
You have likely had blood taken from your arm for routine bloodwork at some point; drawing blood for PRP works exactly the same way. We will take only enough to fill a small vial, which we will then transfer to the centrifuge.
Step 3: Spinning the blood in the centrifuge to separate the PRP
Next, we will place the blood sample in a centrifuge that is specifically designed for PRP —it spins at the exact time and RPM to ensure the highest possible concentration of platelets in the PRP, so you can get the most out of your injections. This takes only a few minutes.
Step 4: Injecting PRP into your scalp
Immediately after preparing the PRP, Dr. Salazar will transfer it to a syringe and inject tiny amounts of the PRP into key locations in the crown of the head. These injections barely reach below the skin’s surface to reach the hair follicle, so you may not even feel them!
After your PRP injections are finished, you can go right back to your normal day. Your scalp may feel a bit sore or sensitive for a few hours; if so, an over-the-counter pain medication, such as Tylenol, should be enough to keep you comfortable.

FAQs about PRP for hair loss
How much does PRP hair restoration cost?
At LJCSC, PRP hair restoration costs $900 for the first treatment, and the $700 for each subsequent treatment. Our PRP hair restoration treatments are eligible for financing; click here to see your options and estimate monthly payments.
Am I a good candidate for PRP hair loss therapy?
If you are bothered by thinning hair but aren’t ready for hair transplants, PRP may be a great option for you to restore a fuller, thicker head of hair without surgery or downtime!
PRP is best if you are in the earlier stages of hair loss, as it can help your healthy hair follicles grow faster and for longer, but will not cause new hair follicles to form. If you have significant balding or thinning, a minimally invasive hair transplant procedure, such as SmartGraft FUE, is likely to be a better option.
How soon will I see results?
The effects of PRP therapy are somewhat at the mercy of your hair growth cycle, so it can take a little while to appreciate the effects. Most patients experience noticeable improvement in the length and fullness of hair starting about 6 months after their first PRP treatment.
How many PRP treatments will I need?
For hair restoration, PRP injections are usually most effective when performed in a series, as this ensures your hair follicles receive a “steady diet” of growth factors. The typical patient will need 2 to 3 treatments; that’s one treatment every two months for six months.
Did you know that you already have the potential to regrow your own natural hair? It’s literally in your blood! Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP for short, has been used for years to help people heal faster after injury or surgery, and now we can use it to help stimulate healthy hair growth, without surgery or downtime.
If you’re experiencing early stages of hair loss, or you would like to enjoy fuller hair growth along the hairline, temples, or other areas, PRP injections may be a great option for you.
What is platelet-rich plasma?
Platelets are disc-shaped blood cells that play an important role in healing and cell regeneration throughout the body. Any time you injure yourself, platelets flood the affected area and deliver growth factors your cells then use to rebuild and repair themselves.
Platelet-rich plasma is blood that has been separated to remove the red blood cells, leaving behind plasma with a super high concentration of platelets. Platelet-rich plasma can be injected in specific areas, such as the skin, face, or crown of the head, to promote cell renewal and healing.
How can PRP help my hair grow?
Each hair follicle on your head grows in cycles: first the hair grows, then it sheds, rinse and repeat. When we’re younger, we don’t notice when hair follicles are in the shedding phase, because there are always plenty of nearby hair follicles in the growth phase keeping hair full.
As we age, the cycle can slow down, leaving fewer hair follicles in the growth phase at any given time. For each hair that sheds, there are fewer hairs growing around it, resulting in hair thinning. The platelets in PRP can help stimulate hair follicle growth, so that each follicle stays in the growth phase longer. PRP helps your hair follicles catch up, so to speak, gradually improving hair fullness.
