Frequently Asked Questions About Kybella®
Am I a good candidate for Kybella?
Kybella can be a wonderful option for almost anyone hoping to refine their jawline and upper neck. It’s best to consult with a knowledgeable, board certified plastic surgeon, but good candidates generally:
- Would like to reduce the appearance of a double chin
- Aren’t quite ready for surgery or do not require more extensive reshaping to achieve the desired results
- Are interested in trying a minimally invasive alternative
- Are in general good health
Here at LJC, we’re all about beautiful, safe results—and it’s important to be honest with your physician about any underlying medical conditions or lifestyle habits that could impact your results or make it difficult for you to heal around the injection sites.
How much does Kybella cost?
At LJC, Kybella injections typically range from $525 to $2,100 per treatment, depending on the amount of product and number of injections required to achieve an individual’s goals. We will provide a detailed, individualized price quote at your consultation.

Who performs Kybella injections?
Kythera, the makers of Kybella, have implemented a training program to educate physicians and their staff on the safe and approved usage of Kybella—and only trained providers can purchase Kybella and administer treatment.
Here at LJC, Drs. Smoot, Brahme, Roark, and Wheeler have successfully completed the physician training program and are now accepting patients for treatment. Lauren Amico Reed, our Director of Aesthetic Services, will also be performing injections.
In addition to specialized training for Kybella, all of our board certified plastic surgeons are experienced in injectable treatments and bring an advanced understanding of facial anatomy to their treatment techniques.
What should I expect during a Kybella treatment?
During your treatment session, Kybella will be precisely and thoughtfully injected into the troublesome fat under your chin. You may feel a very slight stinging sensation during the initial injection, though your overall treatment should be comfortable.
Your appointment should take no longer than 30 minutes. After your treatment, it’s normal to experience some bruising, swelling, redness, or tenderness around the injection sites for the first few days. Numbness or a formation of hardness around the treated area may also occur, though these effects are temporary and completely normal. Many patients report that the intensity of the side effects lessened with each subsequent treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
After you and your surgeon have determined that Kybella is a great option for you, a series of up to six treatments, spaced at least a month apart, will be scheduled—although most patients are happy with their results after just two to four treatments.
Is Kybella safe?
Kybella gained FDA approval for treating submental fullness in spring 2015, making it a relatively new treatment option. Here’s what you need to know:
- Kybella is approved for fat reduction only under the chin
- Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable for treating a double chin
- Physicians must complete Kybella training programs before they can offer treatment
- Kybella is indicated for the improvement of moderate to severe fullness under the chin
What other options do I have for treating neck and chin fat?
If you’re thinking about changing the contour of your neck and chin, LJC has many options for you. Kybella joins Ultherapy® and CoolMini® as a non-surgical option, and ThermiRF is a great minimally invasive skin tightening treatment.
For more dramatic re-contouring of the neck, surgical options include submental liposuction or neck lifts. What’s best for you can be determined by consulting with one of our board certified plastic surgeons or highly trained providers in the Laser & Skincare Clinic
