“Where did my youthful smile go?!” A lot of my patients ask me what they can do to improve their smiles—after all isn’t a happy and youthful smile something that we all want? Over time, it’s normal for the upper lip to lose volume. This can result in a longer, thinner appearance that can impact your smile and make you feel self-conscious.
An ideal lip size and shape has a one to two millimeter “dental show” at rest, according to dentists. That means you should see a small hint of your upper teeth when your face is in its normal, resting position. If you’re not seeing your teeth, you may be hiding one of your best assets behind aging lips: your smile.
Luckily, there is a simple, safe, and very effective way to treat this that many don’t know about: the lip lift.
What is a lip lift?
During a lip lift, a slender strip of skin is removed from just under the nose, where the lip and nose join. This lifts the central portion of the upper lip to expose just a hint of the upper teeth and restore the smile.
I perform lip lifts on nearly half of my facelift patients, who are surprised by how much of a difference it can make. In fact, the smile improvement is often the part of their results they are most happy with.
A lip lift can be performed in conjunction with a facelift or as a 30 minute, standalone procedure under local anesthesia. The process is virtually painless for most patients. It’s normal for the area to swell for the first 72 hours or so, but this should resolve quickly and can be eased with icing. For about a week, you’ll need to be careful not to overexert yourself while your incision heals and your final results take shape.
I have been performing lip lifts for many years now, and I love the simplicity and effectiveness of such a subtle procedure. If you have been concerned with where your smile went, this may be a great solution for you.
