Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia Surgery) in San Diego
Do you shy away from wearing tight shirts or showing off your torso? Have you been unable to firm up your chest, despite your best efforts in the gym? Trust us, you’re not alone—but those feelings of insecurity stop today. You have the power to sculpt your dream chest with gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, in San Diego, CA.
When we think of plastic surgery, we often think about women first. But men deserve to feel amazing about the way they look, too! In the warm, sunny climate of Southern California, you may feel like your whole lifestyle is constricted by your lack of confidence in your chest. Often, a male breast reduction can play a huge role in you leaving those self-image issues in the past. With the help of our board-certified plastic surgeons, confidence is just a consultation away.
You might think gynecomastia is a rare condition by the name alone. But it’s actually extremely common among men of all ages. Here are some facts you should know:
The word “gynecomastia” is a medical term that means “woman-like breasts.”
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 40 to 60% of men are affected by some level of gynecomastia.
While some men experience gynecomastia as a result of medication or illness, most cannot identify a direct cause.
This condition, marked by the appearance of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin on the chest, is often the result of a mix of weight gain, genetics, and testosterone imbalances, making it notoriously difficult to improve with diet and exercise alone.

What Is the Best Way to Treat Gynecomastia?
Through gynecomastia surgery, plastic surgeons remove breast tissue or fat with liposuction, excision, or a combination of both. In the past, surgical removal of the excess tissue was the norm. Now, however, many men are treated with liposuction with excellent results, almost no scarring, and better post-operative contours of the skin and chest wall.
Considering Male Breast Reduction Surgery in San Diego? Here’s How to Determine If You’re a Candidate
If you are a man who has excessively large breasts or are concerned with sagging tissue on the chest after losing weight, you may be a candidate for a male breast reduction. This procedure is intended to give you a flatter chest with a more masculine contour.
Ideal candidates typically struggle with these issues:
Breasts that are larger than they feel comfortable with
Irritation or chafing under the breasts
Puffy or enlarged nipples and areolas
Drooping or excess skin around the chest after weight loss
Self-consciousness when wearing certain clothes or taking their shirt off
The best candidate for this surgery is a healthy male who is near his ideal weight. While heavier men can also benefit, this surgery is not for correction of obesity. Men who have firmer, more elastic skin will enjoy the best results. Any man who is taking steroids is not a good candidate for this surgery.

What to Expect at Your Male Breast Reduction Consultation
Once you decide a male breast reduction is right for you, start by making an appointment with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. During this consultation, you will:
Meet personally in consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon
Have your concerns examined and discuss the specifics of the recommended procedure
Receive information and materials that help you in the decision-making process
See before-and-after pictures of real people like you
Get a specific written quote detailing all the costs
After you schedule your surgery, you’ll attend an individual “pre-op” appointment to discuss all surgical aspects and risks so you’re fully informed and prepared for the big day.
How Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?
Male breast reduction surgery is performed using general anesthesia in our AAAASF-accredited surgical suite. You’ll be monitored by a board-certified anesthesiologist from start to finish.
Liposuction for gynecomastia is relatively simple. Your surgeon will make a very short (½ inch or less) incision in an area that is easily hidden, such as:
Along the edge of the areola
In the fold under the breast
In the axilla (underarm area)
Then, your surgeon will suction excess fat from under the skin. In more severe cases, your surgeon may recommend surgical removal of the breast tissue. This requires an incision on the chest wall.
Both types of surgery usually improve any asymmetry that might exist. Like women’s breasts, the size of each male breast might be slightly different in size and shape, and your surgeon will do his or her best to correct any differences.
As with all surgery, there are risks. General surgical risks include inflammation and infection, hematoma, scarring issues, swelling, bruising, and numbness. Risks specific to male breast reduction include seromas, loss of or reduced nipple sensation, and breast contour changes. Medical complications, although rare, include allergic reactions, pulmonary embolism, heart conditions, and hyperthermia.
What Is Male Breast Reduction Recovery Like?
When you have a cosmetic procedure performed under general anesthesia, it’s important that you plan for recovery time and limit your activities. Here’s a bit more about what you can expect.
A Few More FAQs About Male Breast Reduction Recovery
Q: How Long Is Male Breast Reduction Recovery?
A: You’ll likely be able to resume your normal daily activities within 1 to 2 weeks.
Q: Will I Go Home the Same Day?
A: You’ll need someone to drive you home after the procedure. We always recommend having someone with you the first 24 hours following any surgical procedure with anesthesia.
Q: Is Male Breast Reduction Recovery Painful?
A: You will likely feel some discomfort after the surgery, but we’ll prescribe an oral medication to keep you as comfortable as possible.
Q: When Can I Work Out After Gynecomastia Surgery?
A: Hold off on aerobic activities for 4 to 6 weeks, and talk to your doctor about when you can resume any weight-lifting activities.
Q: Will I Have Scars After Male Breast Reduction?
A: Your incisions will be placed along natural contours of your chest so they’re easily hidden. Avoid the sun on your scars for at least 6 months, as sunlight can cause them to darken. If exposure to the sun is unavoidable, be sure and use a strong sunblock.
