Labiaplasty in San Diego

Labia surgery, commonly called labiaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce or improve the size and shape of the inner or outer labia. At La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre, San Diego our plastic surgeons are specially trained to perform labiaplasty surgery and will consult with you to determine if you could be best served by a labia minoraplasty or labia majoraplasty.

Labiaplasty Surgery Options at LJC

Our surgeons will help you understand the right labiaplasty procedure for you at your consultation. In general, he will perform one or more of the following, depending on the patient’s needs and goals.

Labiaplasty of the labia minora

A Labiaplasty of the labia minora (the smaller inner vaginal lips) addresses the enlarged irregular or uneven tissue that can sometimes be caused by childbirth, hormonal changes or just plain genetics.

Enlarged labia can cause problems with wearing certain tight clothing such as bathing suits or exercise clothing. It can also be a source of chronic irritation or discomfort during sexual intimacy. The labiaplasty meticulously reshapes the large uneven edges of the inner vaginal lips and shrinks them down.

We let the patient choose the appearance she wants, from the minimal presence of the labia; the so-called “complete” labiaplasty to a more anatomic reduction of the volume leaving some tissue behind.

This is part of the discussion you will have during your consultation. The surgery takes 60-90 minutes and is usually performed under sedation, so you will have no memory of the procedure itself. The recovery is quick and you will be back to normal activities rapidly.

Labiaplasty of the labia majora

Labia majora surgery (surgery of the larger outer vaginal lips) is performed for patients who have disproportionally large labia majora, sometimes from childbirth or sometimes from estrogen stimulation. It also produces a dramatic improvement in vulvar appearance in patients who have lost a large amount of weight, when all tissues lose elasticity.

It is an outpatient procedure performed in our operating suites under local anesthesia with sedation, this procedure also has a relatively short recovery time and rapid return to work and normal activity.

In addition, many labiaplasty patients elect to undergo simultaneous vaginal rejuvenation, which is sometimes called vaginoplasty.

Clitoral hood reduction

The clitoral hood, also called the prepuce, acts as a protective barrier to the clitoris. It is located directly over the clitoris and for some women, there is an abundance of this tissue that completely covers the clitoris.

The surgical reduction of this excess tissue over the clitoris is called “clitoral hood reduction.” This procedure is most often performed for functional reasons.

A clitoral hood reduction is most often performed in conjunction with labiaplasty. The sensitive clitoral nerves and the clitoris itself are always protected and never involved in the surgery. This is an outpatient procedure, which takes about thirty minutes to perform. The recovery is usually very uncomplicated and easy.

Women who want to improve their intimate experiences might consider the O-Shot®, which uses a concentrated serum of your body’s own healing factors to renew sensitivity in the clitoral area and inner vaginal wall.
