Breast Reduction in San Diego
If you have overly large breasts, you may be all too familiar with the physical and emotional issues they cause, from back pain to difficulty exercising to feeling self-conscious in your skin. If large breasts interfere with your normal daily activities and keep you from feeling comfortable in your body, a breast reduction may be the answer. Breast reduction surgery creates more attractive contours, a smaller breast size, and an improved self-image. Feeling lighter and living more freely doesn’t have to be a dream—it’s possible with a breast reduction!
Available in San Diego, CA, at La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre & Medical Spa, this surgery reduces the size of your breasts and improves their shape so you can wear and do whatever you like with confidence and comfort.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?
You may be a candidate for breast reduction surgery if you have large, heavy breasts that cause:
- Back, shoulder, and neck pain
- Poor posture
- Bra-strap indentations
- Chafing under the breasts
- Breathing difficulties
- Diminished self-confidence
While you may be considering breast reduction to improve your physical comfort and proportions, our board-certified plastic surgeons consider it equally important to create a natural, aesthetically pleasing breast shape you love. For that reason, they often include a breast lift as part of your breast reduction.
How is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?
Your surgeon will perform your outpatient breast reduction surgery while you are under general anesthesia in our AAAASF-accredited on-site surgical suite. He or she will typically make the incisions around the nipple-areolar complex (the pigmented area) and extend them vertically below the nipple and along the fold under the breast.
Your surgeon will then move the nipple-areolar complex upward to your desired location and remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. He or she will suture and dress your incisions, and you’ll be moved to a private, comfortable recovery room to rest until you’re ready to go home.

How Long Is Breast Reduction Recovery?
Most people enjoy a reasonable and uneventful recovery. While you’ll have to rest at home for the first few days, you’ll be able to get up and walk around the next day after surgery. If you have a desk job, you may be able to return to work within a week or so.
You’ll have to take about a month off from your exercise routine. Heavier lifting and exercise involving the chest will have to wait a little longer. However, you should be back to most daily activities within 2 weeks. Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions for your recovery.
Will I Need to Wear a Special Bra After My Breast Reduction?
For the first 4 to 6 weeks, you’ll need to wear a high-quality sports bra or other very supportive, non-underwire bra while you heal. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on when it’s okay to wear everyday bras.
What Results Can I Expect After My Breast Reduction?
Your new breast shape will continue to improve during the first 6 months or more after your surgery. Scars, although present, are easily hidden by clothing and will fade nicely with proper care.
With smaller, lighter, and shapelier breasts, you’ll enjoy new freedom in many aspects of your life:
- Exercises like running, swimming, and dancing will be more comfortable.
- You’ll have new options for clothing.
- The back, neck, or shoulder pain that came from having large breasts will no longer control your life.
