Thinking about getting a Brazilian butt lift (BBL)? At our plastic surgery practice in San Diego, this 2-in-1 procedure delivers major body contouring benefits by using fat harvested from an area of your choice to create a rounder, fuller, and more lifted backside.

But what is it really like to undergo the surgery, and how long can you expect your results to last? Read on to learn everything you need to know about your BBL timeline, from recovery to working out again and more.

When can I sit after a BBL?

You’ll need to avoid sitting directly on your butt for at least 2 weeks after surgery. The area will be sensitive and swollen, and you won’t want to disturb the newly transplanted fat cells or deform your results in any way.

After the first couple of weeks, your LJC team will help you adjust to working, driving, and so on using a “donut” pillow and other modified seating.

How long will I need to take off work for a BBL?

Most people feel comfortable returning to office work after a week or two, once their energy levels are back up and they’re feeling more like themselves again.

You will need to make some modifications if your job involves lots of sitting, though. Standing desks and kneeling chairs can make returning to work easier while you’re still unable to sit.

When can I work out after a BBL?

Your plastic surgeon will advise you on when you can return to working out. In general, though, patients can gradually resume their workouts somewhere between four and six weeks after surgery. Start with light cardio and weights and slowly work your way up to more intense workouts as you feel comfortable and according to your surgeon’s clearance. Pay attention to how your body feels and give yourself some extra time to heal if you need it.

When you do start working out again, don’t stress about “burning away” your new assets—only substantial weight loss is likely to affect your results. Exercises like squats and lunges are totally OK and will even help you continue to shape and build your behind.

When will I see my final BBL results?

You should see your final results within six months. During the first few months post-surgery, you will lose a bit of the fat that was injected during your procedure. However, your surgeon will take this into account when he or she transfers the fat to make sure you’ll still have plenty of curves you love in the long run.

How long do BBL results last?

Results typically last many years and really only change with major weight fluctuations. The best way to get long-lasting results (other than choosing an experienced surgeon, of course) is to have the procedure done when you are at or near the ideal weight you plan to maintain.
