Talking About Breast Surgery with Dr. Brahme

Breast augmentation is rapidly becoming the most sought after and popular plastic surgery procedure in America, especially in the sunshine states. At La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre, we have one of the busiest Breast practices in the country, according to statistics from Mentor Corporation, the leading breast implant manufacturer, so you can rest assured that we are very experienced.

While all the surgeons at our Centre perform lots of breast augmentations, I’d like to tell you about my philosophy:

First of all this is about you and what you want. You are the one having surgery and it is your choice what you want to look like. I will help guide you and give you reasonable expectations, but it is about your goals, not what I or anyone else thinks is appropriate for you.

When you come in for the consultation, you will first meet with one of the nurses, most likely Cristina, who has worked with me for almost fifteen years. Cristina will go through your basic history, number of children, previous breast surgery, bra size etc. She will also talk to you about the Centre, our operating rooms, anesthesiologists and so on. She may also show you different implants and discuss the pros and cons of each.

Next, I’ll meet with you and we will get to know each other. I’ll go over what you have discussed with Cristina and then we will have you change into a gown. After that we will examine you and take measurements of your breasts, waist and hips. We will have you do some sizing (actually try the implants on in a bra and tight T Shirt to see what different sizes look like). Then I will go through some more aspects of the surgery, recovery and so on. It is often helpful to bring a friend or significant other along to the consultation, so you can get all your questions answered and remember what we talked about.

At all times I want you to show me what you want, whether it is by bringing in pictures, or looking at our albums or bringing a friend whose breast you like (and who is willing to come!) The most important aspect of breast augmentation surgery is what YOU want. I cannot stress that enough. Many surgeons want to impose their ideas on your decision-making, but this is your body and your surgery. Within anatomic limits, I try to give you what you want.

Breast augmentation is a quick operation and we can usually fit you in at your convenience, but remember that you will need to take a few days off from work, and it may be three or four weeks before you can go back to exercise. We have many office staff and nurses who have had breast surgery. They can talk about their experiences with you, answer your questions and put your mind at rest.

We do breast augmentations on women of all ages, from 18 to 80, resulting in many happy patients.

Please visit our photo gallery to see some examples of my patients who have had breast augmentations. I am very proud of my work and my patients generally love their results. Cristina and I look forward to meeting you at your consultation to talk about the changes that you want to see in your body, and plan the right surgery for you.
