VIEW PHOTOSIs Breast Augmentation Right for You?
First things first: Let’s make sure breast augmentation is the right procedure to create the look you’re dreaming of. Breast augmentation gives you larger and shapelier breasts using silicone or saline breast implants. It’s a great option for:
- Boosting the size of breasts that you feel are too small for your frame
- Balancing asymmetrical breasts
- Bringing you back to the size or fullness you had before weight loss or children
Many women combine breast augmentation with a breast lift to restore a perkier, more uplifted shape if their breasts have started to sag with age or childbearing.
They may also elect to combine cosmetic breast surgery with a tummy tuck and other body contouring procedures as part of a mommy makeover.

Considering Breast Augmentation in San Diego? Here’s What To Expect at Your Consultation
If you’re considering breast augmentation, you’ll want to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. Here’s what your initial visit will entail:
Meeting With Your Surgeon One-on-One
When you arrive at our office for your consultation, you’ll be greeted by our friendly receptionists. They will make sure we have your paperwork in order and then guide you to a private consultation room. Your surgeon and nurse will talk about your goals, listen to your concerns, and let you know what they recommend.
Your Private Cosmetic Breast Exam
To give you a personalized recommendation, your surgeon must do a physical examination of your breasts. You’ll change into a clean, comfortable exam robe. The surgeon and your nurse will both be in the room with you for the exam. You might feel a little nervous, but don’t worry—you can bet that our surgeons and nurses have helped other people with the very same issues you have.
Reviewing Our Photo Gallery
Looking at pictures is a great way to confirm communication. Our extensive photo gallery allows you to view all types of breast results and find someone with similar anatomy. It helps you convey your goals more clearly and helps your surgeon explain the possibilities with your anatomy.
Visualizing Your Result With Curves Connection™
Breast augmentation consultation includes 2 options for visualizing your outcome. Of the 2 options, the sizing session is the more popular among our patients. Patients have fun “test-driving” their new look.
- Sizing Session: This is where you try different breast implant sizes and get an idea of what might look best on you in clothing. Once you’re happy, we take “after” photos of your new look and give you a copy to take home. This way, you can think more about your size choice and even get opinions from people you trust.
- Vectra 3D Imaging: This simulation technology allows you to preview what your breasts will look like with the desired implant shape and size.
Your lifestyle is an important factor when considering breast size. If you are active in sports, you might want to keep your implant size smaller. If you have a body type with fuller hips or wider shoulders, you might want to consider larger implants to create a more proportioned shape for your body.
Scheduling Your Surgery
You will also receive a personalized financial quote from your patient coordinator that clearly outlines all the costs involved. You can discuss payment options, including payment plans. When you’re ready to take the next steps, give us a call, and we’ll put your transformation on the books!

Which Breast Implant Is Best for Me?
As you have likely discovered, there are as many opinions about the “best” implants as there are breast augmentation patients. We urge you not to get too hung up on a certain implant size, shape, style, or brand. The gummy bear implants that look fabulous on your friend may or may not improve your look the way you want. Instead, approach your options by asking, “How do I want to look?” rather than, “Which implants do I want?”
The surgeons at La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre will listen to your goals, evaluate your anatomy, and recommend the implants they believe will give you the look you want.
- Saline: A silicone shell filled with saline (saltwater). These implants are FDA-approved for people 18 and older.
- Silicone: A silicone shell filled with silicone gel. These implants are FDA-approved for people 22 and older.
- Highly cohesive silicone: Also called a “gummy bear” breast implant or form-stable silicone implant. These are also FDA-approved for people 22 and older.
- We offer implants from: Allergan (Natrelle®) and Motiva (Ergonomix® and Ergonomix2®), to name a few. Don’t see your implant choice? We can special-order – just ask!
For those who want to learn more, we’ve created an entire blog post about your breast implant options.
What To Expect the Day of Your Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed and is very safe in the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon. Our surgeons perform breast augmentations in our QUAD A-accredited operating room using general anesthesia. Trust us—even though augmentation is a relatively quick surgery, it’s better to be comfortably under anesthesia during the operation. Rest assured that a board-certified anesthesiologist will care for you while your board-certified plastic surgeon concentrates on the procedure.

Where Are Breast Implant Incisions Made?
Incision sites vary and include the following areas:
- Periareolar: Along the lower border of the areola.
- Inframammary: Underneath the breast.
- Transaxillary: Through the armpit.
- Transumbilical: Through the belly button.
The two most common incision sites are at the areola’s edge or underneath the breast. At LJCSC, we use the Keller Funnel (when appropriate) to reduce the risk of contamination and infection, reduce tissue trauma, and allow for shorter scars.
Enjoy peace of mind, shorter incisions, and a lower risk of complications with this leading-edge safety device.

What Are the Risks of Breast Augmentation?
Should you decide to have surgery, you will have a special appointment to prepare you for surgery and recovery. It includes a review of all risks, and you will have an opportunity to ask any questions.
Risks specific to breast augmentation include swelling and bruising, itching, numbness, discomfort and pain, capsular contracture, loss of sensation or tissue to breast skin or nipples, wrinkling, asymmetry, and infection. Your surgeon will also discuss your personal risks with you during your initial consultation and before surgery. Later, you will have an in-depth, pre-operative visit to cover all aspects of your surgery and recovery.
How Long Is Breast Augmentation Recovery?
Recovery from breast augmentation is surprisingly quick for most people. You can usually return to work within a week if you have a desk job. Although you’ll have to take a break from workouts, you should be able to ease back into aerobic activity and exercise not involving the chest in about 4 weeks. Your surgeon will let you know when it’s okay to resume exercise.
Breast augmentation is done using general anesthesia, so you will need someone to take you home after surgery and be with you the first day or so following the procedure. Your surgeon will remove any remaining sutures within 7 to 12 days. You can expect some mild discomfort as you heal, although new pain control techniques keep this discomfort to a minimum. With adequate rest, the healing process is usually speedy and uneventful.
