Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Hector Salazar with patient at La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre
Have you met Dr. Hector Salazar-Reyes? He may be a fresh face around LJCSC (he joined our practice in early 2018), but he’s brought with him over 17 years of training and experience in reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery. He and his lead nurse, Carmen, are also both fluent in Spanish and English, offering a fully bilingual surgical team at LJCSC.

Most importantly, he has a reputation for being one of the kindest, most personable board certified plastic surgeons in San Diego. But you don’t have to take our word for it. We sat down with Dr. Salazar between patient visits to get the first-hand scoop on his patient care philosophy. After reading this Q&A, we bet you’ll want to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Salazar!

1. Why did you choose to focus on cosmetic surgery?

Dr. Salazar: No other branch of medicine allows a surgeon to help patients achieve such immediate improvements, not only physically, but also emotionally. I love that my work has such a positive impact on my patients’ lives—it’s why I wanted to become a doctor in the first place, to help people feel great and enjoy life to the fullest. I know cosmetic surgery is the world where I belong.

2. What is your secret to achieving a great cosmetic surgery result?

Dr. Salazar: I listen to the patient. Taking time to listen and understand your goals is essential to creating results you will love. I have the training and experience to achieve a great result, but I need to be 100% sure I understand what you want to achieve a great outcome for you. This is why I really like to meet and get to know my patients really well. I provide guidance and help you navigate your options because as a patient you should have some decision-making power. Taking time to get to know one another helps us both move forward confidently.

Once a decision has been made, I design a surgical plan to achieve your goals as closely as possible in the least invasive manner possible. While surgery will always involve incisions and scars, I am careful to reshape with the least amount of impact to tissues. This not only helps you recover faster and get results with less scarring—it also results in a more natural-looking, longer-lasting outcome in most cases.

3. What are your favorite procedures to perform?

Dr. Salazar: While I enjoy all aspects of cosmetic surgery, breast enhancement and body contouring procedures are among my favorites. When patients can suddenly wear clothing they never felt comfortable wearing before, they also feel more comfortable and confident in social situations—a whole new world opens up to them. This can have a profoundly positive impact on their self-image.

From a surgical standpoint, each breast and body procedure is like a unique 3D puzzle that challenges me to blend my technical abilities with artistic concepts. I enjoy listening to a patient’s goals and then applying individualized surgical techniques to achieve the desired outcome.

4. What can patients expect when they meet you for a consultation?

Dr. Salazar: Every patient deserves a doctor who will listen and pay attention. The prospect of visiting a doctor for the first time can generate anxiety; you may wonder, “Will they listen? Will they understand what I feel and what I need?” To me, both are fundamental to the patient-surgeon relationship and crucial for me to achieve your goals, so I start by hearing your story, taking as much time as needed for you to feel satisfied that I understand.

Next, we discuss your treatment options in a way that makes sense to you. You should feel able to easily discuss the procedures you are considering, as well as the procedures you decide not to have, with a family member or friend should you choose. I want you to feel fully informed and confident about your decision, whether that is to move forward with surgery or to even wait.

Overall, I try to make the consultation experience educational and professional, yet very relaxed and friendly. I want you to feel informed, not pressured. All of the LJCSC staff and surgeons approach patient care in a similar manner. Not everyone we meet will need a procedure, and not everyone is a safe candidate for surgery at the time. In all cases, I will be honest with you. I want to help patients make desired changes, but safety is my highest priority.

5. What can patients expect from you once they decide to have surgery?

Dr. Salazar: As I already touched on, I approach each operation with a detailed surgical plan in place to achieve the desired changes with the least amount of impact on the patient’s body. In the post-operative phase—and this is key—my patients see me during every single visit.

It’s really important to me to keep up with my patients over the long term. There are three reasons for this: first, I enjoy interacting with my patients as much as possible. Second, that’s exactly the way I would like to be treated. And thirdly, I really think that’s what patients expect from their plastic surgeon.

This is unique to our approach at LJCSC, and a big reason I chose to join the practice. In some practices, the patient may see their plastic surgeon once and maybe never again after surgery, and follow-up care is delegated to other staff. We’d never, ever do that at LJCSC. We’re all very close to our patients.
