Are You a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery helps women and men look refreshed and more youthful. The best candidates are physically and emotionally healthy, understand the surgery and recovery, and have reasonable expectations for their results. Blepharoplasty can benefit patients of all skin types and ethnicities.
Women and men choose upper eyelid surgery to attain a variety of improvements, which include:
Tightening lax skin and muscle
Removing pockets of fat from the corners of the eyes
Defining the upper eyelid crease
Improving symmetry between the upper eyelids
Our surgeons perform functional eyelid surgery to improve your peripheral vision by removing skin from the outer portion of the upper eyelids. This procedure may be covered by medical insurance if it is considered medically necessary.
Lower eyelid surgery can correct concerns related to genetics and the natural aging process, which often include:
Puffy under eye bags
Sagging skin and muscle
Exposed white of the lower eye
Tear trough deformity (a groove between the lower eyelid and upper cheek)
Upper Eyelid vs Lower Eyelid Surgery
Depending on your symptoms and concerns, eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids or both. Incisions are well-concealed in the natural eyelid creases. As discussed above, upper eyelid surgery primarily addresses excess eyelid skin and can also improve obstructed vision caused by sagging skin. Lower eyelid surgery focuses on reducing under eye bags, puffiness, and dark circles that develop due to hereditary factors or aging.
Combining both procedures addresses multiple concerns and results in a harmonious, balanced appearance of the upper and lower eyelids during a single surgery. We’ll assess your symptoms and develop a tailored plan, which may include upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both procedures to help you achieve your youthful look.

Should I Get a Brow Lift or Blepharoplasty for Hooded Eyes?
Many are unsure whether a brow lift or blepharoplasty will best rejuvenate their eye area and upper face. The forehead, eyebrows, and upper eyelids are adjoining facial structures that may affect each other over time; for example, if the eyebrows descend, they may make the upper eyelids look heavy. Here are some differences:
Brow lifts elevate sagging eyebrows and smooth out forehead lines.
Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin and soft tissue that contribute to hooding.
Many people benefit from a combination of these procedures, while others need one or the other to look rejuvenated. Learn more in this blog post.
Can I Combine My Eyelid Lift With Other Procedures?
Many people combine eyelid surgery with other procedures for an even more rejuvenating result. Options often include:
During your consultation, your surgeon will talk with you about the improvements you’d like to make and develop a personalized surgical plan to get you there.
Are There Noninvasive Alternatives to Blepharoplasty Surgery?
People looking for alternatives to eyelid surgery may be candidates for one or more of the following nonsurgical treatments:
UPNEEQ® is a prescription eyedrop that provides a nonsurgical upper eyelid lift.
Dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® can restore volume in the brow area to open the upper eye area, and fillers such as JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® can correct tear troughs to soften under-eye circles.
BOTOX® Cosmetic can provide a subtle brow lift by relaxing the muscles that pull down the outer corner of the eyebrow.
Your provider will help you determine your best treatment options during your consultation.

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?
At LJC, our plastic surgeons perform blepharoplasty on an outpatient basis at our Quad A-accredited surgical suite. A board-certified anesthesiologist will place you under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation to make sure you stay safe and comfortable.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Your surgeon makes discreet incisions where the natural crease should be in the upper lids. The surgeon removes lax skin and excess fatty tissue through the incisions and tightens the remaining skin. Once complete, the surgeon closes the incisions using ultrafine sutures to minimize scarring.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
For lower eyelid surgery, the surgeon places the incisions just below the lash line in the lower lids. Through the incisions, the surgeon redistributes the fat to reduce under eye bags, tightens the skin, and adjusts the underlying muscles to support a more youthful look for years to come. The surgeon uses ultrafine sutures to close the incisions so the thin scar is not noticeable beneath the lower eyelashes.
If your only concern is excess fat in the lower lids, your surgeon may perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. This “scarless” technique removes or redistributes the fat through an incision inside the lower lids. In this case, our surgeons use dissolvable sutures.

Most people enjoy a quick and relatively comfortable recovery after eyelid surgery. While experiences vary, here is a general timeline of recovery milestones:
2 to 3 days: Swelling and bruising peak.
3 to 5 days: Resume daily activities.
7 days: Sutures removed.
7 to 14 days: Return to non-strenuous work and school.
3 weeks: Safe to resume wearing contact lenses. Swelling and bruising resolve.
4 to 6 weeks: Resume strenuous activity and exercise.
3 to 6 months: Final results attained.
Your surgeon will give you thorough instructions regarding your individual recovery process.
Q: Is there a difference between eyelid surgery and blepharoplasty?
A: Nope! These two terms are often used interchangeably to describe the same procedure. They both refer to the surgical modification of the eyelids to improve their appearance or function.
Q: What type of doctor is best for eyelid surgery?
A: The best type of doctor for eyelid surgery is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the eye and surrounding structures. Our skilled surgeons are experienced in both upper and lower eyelid surgery.
Q: How many years does blepharoplasty last?
A: While every patient varies, blepharoplasty usually lasts 10 to 15 years or longer. You can prolong your results by following a good skincare regimen, avoiding sun exposure, and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits.
Q: What’s the best age for blepharoplasty?
A: Truthfully, there’s no “best” age for blepharoplasty. Most candidates are over age 30 with concerns about sagging, drooping, or asymmetry in their upper or lower eyelids. Younger patients who inherit hooded lids or puffy under-eye bags can also benefit from eyelid surgery. Regardless of your age, during your consultation, we will conduct a physical assessment, discuss your concerns, and thoroughly assess your candidacy for eyelid surgery.
Q: What’s the best time of year to get eyelid surgery in San Diego?
A: Our mild climate makes eyelid surgery in San Diego possible at any time of year. However, many patients prefer to schedule their surgery during the cooler months, from fall to early spring. Healing skin is more vulnerable to the effects of sun exposure, and this timing minimizes the chance of swelling and other sun-related complications.
