Is Revision Rhinoplasty Right for You?

Revision rhinoplasty is a specialized surgical procedure for people who are unhappy with the results of a previous nose job or who are experiencing functional issues after rhinoplasty. Revision rhinoplasty can:

  • Correct asymmetry or crookedness
  • Reshape nostrils
  • Smooth out bumps or a dorsal hump
  • Alter the tip and bridge of the nose
  • Address breathing concerns
  • Fix issues created by either the removal of too much or too little tissue

Our rhinoplasty specialists also perform complex rhinoplasty procedures for women and men with concerns about their noses that are complicated by genetics or injury.

“As a plastic surgeon, there is no greater satisfaction than witnessing the transformation that can be achieved through revision rhinoplasty. Seeing my patients’ newfound confidence and happiness with their appearance is truly a gratifying experience that never gets old.”

How Is Revision Rhinoplasty Performed?

Because the needs of each revision rhinoplasty patient are unique, our surgeons customize each procedure depending on the nature of the correction needed. Our rhinoplasty surgeons use many of the same advanced techniques they use during initial nose jobs, including open and closed rhinoplasty.

They tailor their approach based on the presence of scar tissue or the lack of cartilage and other structures—issues that aren’t present during a primary rhinoplasty procedure. If there is excessive scarring, they may need to remove some of this tissue to ensure the results are not distorted.

The procedure often requires the surgeon to rebuild the nasal structural framework, such as the bridge of the nose. If there isn’t enough residual cartilage from the septum, they accomplish this by grafting cartilage from the ear or ribs. In some cases, they may also harvest fibrous, connective tissue from the temple. Using techniques such as grafting, suturing, and repositioning allows them to create a more symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing nose that enhances your facial features.

What Is Recovery Like After Revision Rhinoplasty?

In many ways, the recovery after revision rhinoplasty is similar to what you experienced after your initial rhinoplasty procedure. The initial healing process typically lasts about a week to 10 days. During that time, most patients wear either an internal or external splint to protect the nose and provide structure as it heals.

Our surgeons recommend taking short walks around the house starting the day of the surgery to promote good blood circulation, which can help speed up the healing process. Exercising, heavy lifting, and other strenuous exercises should be avoided for the first month of your recovery. You’ll need more time before getting back into contact sports.

As with the initial rhinoplasty, residual swelling can last for several months. The final appearance of your nose may not be apparent for up to a year after surgery. We provide detailed post-op instructions for you to follow.
