Breast surgery has helped many San Diego women feel more confident and feminine. Having been steadily refined over the last four decades, cosmetic breast breast surgery gives many patients a renewed, positive self-image. Because breast surgery has successful outcomes for so many women, it continues to be a favorite cosmetic procedure. There are three main types of breast surgery:
Breast Augmentation (Enlargement)
The desire to have larger breasts, while based on our social norms, is very real for many women. Breast augmentation surgery is extremely well understood and one of the most commonly performed cosmetic operations in the U.S. The implants used are either saline-filled or silicone-filled. The incisions can be placed around the areolae, under the breast, in the axilla, or even around the belly button. Recovery is usually short and the results can be dramatic.
While some women are born with saggy breasts, the vast majority of breast lifts are performed for women who have had children and/or breast fed. Aging and weight loss may also cause breast ptosis (sagging). Many breast lifts usually require relatively long scars but can be very successful in restoring more youthful breast contours and position. There are different types of breast lifts and the type best suited for you will be discussed in consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon.
Large, heavy breasts can be painful, cumbersome, cause chaffing of the skin under the breasts and even aggravate back or shoulder problems. For some women it makes dressing or looking good in clothing more difficult and reduces their positive self image. Most reduction mastectomies require relatively long scars, but patient satisfaction is usually extremely high after successful breast reduction surgery. Occasionally, liposuction can be used as a breast reduction method.
