Considering a Nose Job in San Diego? A Few Tips + What to Expect

Why consider nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty)?

One of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States is rhinoplasty or nose reshaping—often referred to as a “nose job.” Every year, about two hundred thousand Americans decide to change the shape of their noses. This number is only expected to rise. Not only has this procedure enjoyed popularity locally in San Diego, but it is a favorite among Hollywood celebrities. Greats like Marilyn Monroe, Nicole Kidman, and Halle Berry have all had a rhinoplasty.

The reshaping of the nose can do much to enhance your looks, as well as your body image. But like other cosmetic procedures, you should not expect changes in your appearance to change your life. Our self-esteem is often affected by our looks, so it is not uncommon for certain parts of our anatomy to bother us. For men and women alike, the nose is often a source of unhappiness. When the nose is out of proportion or has certain characteristics that make it less attractive to the eye, we often think about changing it.

The nose is the most prominent feature on our face, so whether we are viewed head-on or in profile, the nose is the center of attention. Typical nasal problems that are addressed through rhinoplasty operations are large noses, a bump on the nose, a nose that is too wide or is crooked, a nose where the end is too large or hangs down, and the “ski jump” nose. Sometimes, a patient’s nose has a combination of several of these concerns.

A new nose should still be your nose …

The best nose reshaping is one in which your nose still looks true to your ethnic background and to your facial bone structure. So it’s important that you have reasonable expectations about what is surgically possible for you. To flip through a magazine and pick out a nose shape that you would like to have is unrealistic. You must understand that a very large nose cannot be changed to a very small one.

You don’t want to go to a surgeon where every nasal surgery result looks the same. You want to find a surgeon who knows how to create a more normal and beautiful nose that is “right” for you.

When you visit a board certified plastic surgeon and talk to them about nasal surgery, there are some things you should look for. First and foremost, you want to see actual before and after photographs of that doctor’s patient results. Second, you want to know how long the surgeon has been in practice and how much of his or her practice involves nasal surgery. These factors help you assess the surgeon’s skills.

Another great tool that we use is “imaging.” Using your digital photo, our surgeons can show you what we can achieve surgically for you. With this technology, your surgeon can show you his vision and plan for your surgery both face on and in profile, allowing you to have a more in-depth conversation about what is possible. The ability to look at your face with the planned changes to your nose is a great communication tool for both you and your surgeon.

Common Rhinoplasty Techniques

There are different surgical techniques in rhinoplasty operations. The common nasal surgeries are closed rhinoplasty, open rhinoplasty, tip rhinoplasty, rhino/septoplasty, and secondary rhinoplasty. In order for you to know which procedure or procedures is best for you, a one-on-one consultation with an experienced surgeon is necessary.

The structure of the nose is comprised of small bones and cartilage. This delicate support system means that the surgeon must have a thorough understanding of the nasal anatomy and framework and be skilled in rhinoplasty operative techniques. So you want to be in the hands of a skilled and experienced surgeon. At La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre, only board certified plastic surgeons do cosmetic nasal surgery. This is a standard that we adhere to and strongly recommend to all patients.

How long is rhinoplasty recovery?

In San Diego, rhinoplasty is done on an outpatient basis under sedation, with local or general anesthesia. You will be sent home after 1-2 hours in our recovery room. While you will need to have someone with you for the first 24 hours after surgery, you will be able to get up and walk around the next day.

Following surgery, you may be required to wear an internal or external splint for about seven to ten days. This provides protection and structure to your healing nose.  The nose area will be bruised and puffy following the procedure. This usually disappears within a few weeks, but subtle swelling may persist for about six months.

Recovery is relatively quick in some respects, but it is also a long-term process. Most patients feel ready to go out in public within 1 week and go back to a desk job within 2 weeks. However, exercise, heavy lifting, and other strenuous activities that raise blood pressure will be off-limits for the first 4 weeks. You will have to avoid contact sports for a longer period.

It’s important to realize that your new nose shape will continue to develop up to a year after your surgery. Your plastic surgeon will give you all the details about your recovery from nose reshaping throughout the surgery process.

Nose Surgery: Safety & Post-Op Care

As with all cosmetic procedures, there are possible surgical risks. General surgical risks include swelling and bruising, inflammation and infection, blood loss, itching, and numbness. Some of the surgical risks specific to nasal surgery are difficulty breathing through the nose, nasal obstruction, scarring, and swelling. Although rare, some surgical complications can occur such as cardiac issues, allergic reactions, and pulmonary embolism.

We recommend that rhinoplasty surgery be done with anesthesia. Two types of anesthesia are used: general anesthesia or MAC (Monitored Anesthesia Care). With either, you will be comfortable during your surgery. Rhinoplasty is done on an outpatient basis, so after surgery, you will spend some time in the recovery room and then be released to go home with a friend or family member. You will not be able to drive, and it is always recommended that someone is with you for the first twenty-four hours. Do not expect to go home in a cab.

Your Rhinoplasty Consultation

Once you decide rhinoplasty may be right for you, start by making an appointment with one or more surgeons. While at your consultation, discuss your specific goals and expectations. The more you communicate at this visit, the more likely you are to be happy with your result.
