The Facelift & Necklift Procedure
Facelifts range in size from “mini” to “standard” depending on location and extent of skin laxity. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia. Incisions are made within the hairline (or along the hair margin) above the ear, extending down around the lobe and ending in or below the hairline behind the ear. The subcutaneous layers and neck muscles are tightened, the facial skin is re-draped and lifted, and the excess skin is removed. Neck procedures produce a more youthful appearing neck with a well-defined contour.
Recovery time from facelift procedures varies depending on the extent of the facelift as well as other factors such as your age at the time of surgery. Most patients enjoy a rather quick and painless recovery, and are able to resume most daily activities within a couple of weeks. After the first week or so, and your surgeon will give you permission to use makeup to camouflage any residual bruising. He or she will also provide you with detailed instructions to follow to help you do what you can to ensure a swift recovery and optimal results.
Preoperative planning with your plastic surgeon will have determined how the surgery will be performed. Imaging can be performed so that you can actually “see” what the result would look like with more or less correction.
Am I a good candidate for a facelift?
The best candidates for facelift surgery are non-smokers in overall good health. The best way to determine if you’re a good candidate is to speak with a board certified plastic surgeon, but there are a few criteria to consider: do you have sagging skin around the jawline, mid-face, and neck? Are deep facial folds making you look older? Would you like to look an average of 10 years younger? If the answer is yes, a facelift may be right for you.
When should I get a facelift?
If you can pinch a good bit of skin in the areas of your face and neck that bother you, it may be time to consider surgical rejuvenation. A facelift typically looks more subtle and natural the earlier you choose to have the procedure. Thus it’s wise to stay on top of facial aging with smaller procedures at intervals. Still, a well done rejuvenation can look natural at any age, provided your surgeon has an artistic touch and doesn’t overdo it. One thing that’s sure—facial rejuvenation is a worthwhile investment that is helpful to people in the peak years of their career, as well as in their social lives.
Where is facelift surgery performed?
Our board certified plastic surgeons perform all procedures in our accredited surgical facility.
Do you need anesthesia for a facelift?
Your facelift will be performed under general anesthesia administered by a board certified anesthesiologist or with IV sedation, depending on your surgeon’s recommendations and the type of facelift being performed.
Will I have scars after a facelift?
All surgical procedures result in some level of scarring, but your facelift scare will very likely by minimally visible. That’s because our surgeons take special care to place incisions as inconspicuously as possible, where they are hidden by your hair and natural skin folds. For a facelift, key incisions are usually made in front of or behind the ear and in the natural hairline.
How much does a facelift cost?
The cost of a facelift for men can range from $8,000–$13,000 depending on whether you would benefit from a mini or standard. You may need to include a neck lift if you have sagging skin and folds in the frontal part of your neck, or neck liposuction if you have deposits of fat in the neck and under the chin. A combined standard facelift and neck lift can range from $14,000–$16,500.
Worried that what you need might be out of your price range? Surprisingly, a facelift might be more economical than repeated BOTOX and filler injections in the long run. Apply for financing at LJCSC and you can have an affordable payment plan for as little as $152 per month. Keep in mind that surgical facial rejuvenation can be a very worthwhile investment; it’s our most effective tool for turning back the clock. Your money is likely better spent on this long-lasting solution, rather than on expensive creams and treatments that cannot eliminate excess skin.
If you look older and more tired than you wish, consider a facelift with one of our board certified San Diego plastic surgeons. Visible signs of facial aging are caused by a loss of skin elasticity and muscle tone of the face and neck, and any person over the age of 35 can experience this—though it is more typical for lax facial skin to become a concern starting in your 40s.
By your 50s it will be more noticeable, and no expensive skin creams will prevent or correct deepening skin folds or eliminate neck bands.

All You Need to Know About Facelifts
A lot of people don’t realize that facelifts are intended to target the mid and lower face. Thus, the procedure may be very desirable if your jaw line is losing its youthful shape. Many patients also have jowls and deep creases between the base of the nose and the corners of the mouth, and horizontal neck wrinkles.
If you believe you lack youthful chin and neck contours and are hiding your neck in turtlenecks as your profile becomes less defined, a facelift and neck lift may be the answer.
If you also have concerns about your upper face and eyes, your plastic surgeon will suggest a total facial rejuvenation (as shown in the patient pictured below). Browlift can address a sagging brow, while eyelid lift takes care of loose skin and bags around the eyes.
